Bastian Schweinsteiger announced his retirement from the German national team today, bringing the curtain down on an illustrious international career which spanned 12 years, and saw him win 120 caps.

The Manchester United midfielder was an integral part of the German football revolution, indeed his arrival on the scene directly coincided with the dramatic shift in playing style and culture around the German team.

Along with Lukas Podolski, Schweinsteiger was the face of a bright and happy German team, a world away from the dour and often unpleasant teams of the past.

Schweinsteiger was the midfield general in a team that consistently reached the final stages of the big competitions from 2006 – 2016, his crowning glory coming in 2014, when he lifted the World Cup in Brazil.

It wasn’t such a happy end for him, as his role in Euro 2016 semi-final defeat to France saw him painted as the villain of the piece, but his legacy will remain an emphatically positive one.

Podolski thanks Schweini for THAT Selfie

Lukas Podolski paid glowing tribute to Schweini on Facebook today, noting that the pair must have played at least 100 games together for the national team.

Poldi was also keen to thank his mate for taking part in that legendary selfie on the pitch when they won the World Cup, which attained iconic status and was even used as Twitter’s wallpaper for some time.
