The international break is over and despite some big club games over the coming weekend, there is only one match to look forward to: El Clasico as Barcelona host Real Madrid in La Liga.

Barcelona come into this match 10 points clear of Real Madrid and the encounter will be an emotional affair with tributes planned for Johan Cruyff, who passed away last week.

These days El Clasico is not just a battle between Real Madrid and Barcelona but an opportunity to compare Cristiano Ronaldo and Leo Messi on the pitch.

Undoubtedly two of the greatest players to have ever played the Beautiful Game, it is the fortune of this generation to see Ronaldo and Messi play against each other at least twice a season and usually more often than that.

The fact that the pair have won the Ballon d’Or on the last eight occasions pretty much says it all.

Ahead of El Clasico, the personal goal scoring records have been compared and it turns out that ever since Cristiano Ronaldo joined Real Madrid, the pair have a very similar record in El Clasicos.

Ronaldo and Messi have scored the same amount of goals in the same amount of appearances with the Argentine only edging things on assists.

El Clasico since 2009-10…

MESSI
24 appearances
15 goals
10 assists

CRISTIANO
24 appearances
15 goals
2 assists

Madrid based newspaper AS have also compared the El Clasico records of Leo Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo – see the front cover below.

AS point out that surely no one could argue that Ronaldo is not a big-game player with these numbers.

But, in their 24 shared El Clasicos Messi has been on the winning side 12 times, Ronaldo six times with six draws.

Breaking down their El Clasico goals, Ronaldo has scored nine at the Camp Nou, whilst Messi has 10 at The Bernabeu. Quite simply both are big game players, whatever the venue!

The full Ronaldo & Messi records in El Clasico, not just in the games they have both played in, can also be seen below.

Both #Messi & #Ronaldo have scored several times in the El Clasico, but who will do better this weekend? #FCB #RMCF
