Nigeria commands a superior record over Algeria since the two countries first clashed on January 10, 1973 during the All Africa Games in Lagos. On that occasion, the Green Eagles drew 2-2 with their Algerian counterparts.

In the 1978 Africa Games, Algeria had the better of the Eagles running away with a 1-0 victory.

The Green Eagles under the captainship of Chairman, Christian Chukwu in an Africa Cup of Nations encounter in Lagos inflicted one of their best defeats on the Algerians after recording a 3-0 humbling of the Desert Foxes.

The reverse was the case in 1981 when the Algerians recorded a double over Nigeria on their way to qualifying for the 1982 World Cup. On that score, Algeria recorded 2-0 victory over the Eagles in Lagos and in the return leg recorded another 2-1 victory.

At the 1984 Africa Cup of Nations in Stade Bouaké, Cote d’Ivoire the Eagles, under the tutelage of Coach Adegboye Onigbinde played out a goalless draw with the Algerians. In Maroc ’88, Nigeria and Algeria played out another draw, this time it ended 1-1.

Then came Nigeria’s heaviest defeat in modern history, the 1990 Africa Cup of Nations. With Coach Clemens Westerhof at the helm, Nigeria lost 1-5 to the Algerians in Algiers. It was the opening match of that year’s AFCON. But Nigeria picked up the pieces and rallied back to play Algeria in the final of the tournament. The vastly improved Nigerian side lost 0-1 to Algeria but returned with the silver medal.

On July 1993, the Eagles paid Algeria back in their own coins with a 4-1 bashing in a FIFA World Cup qualifier. The return leg in Algeria saw the Eagles pull a 1-1 draw, courtesy a George Finidi late equaliser. That earned Nigeria the USA ’94 World Cup ticket.

Since that draw in 1993, Algeria has neither beaten nor drawn a game against the Eagles. Conversely, Nigeria has recorded five straight wins over the Desert Foxes in 1995
